It was a good start for Martin Molnár in the first weekend of the four-race WSK Super Master Series in Lonato, Italy. He finished second in his group and sixth overall in the Qualifying of the 69-strong OKJ category. After hard-fought Heats, he took a valuable sixth place in the Pre-Finals, which was worth championship points.

WSK’s field was enlarged and strengthened for the first round of the Super Master Series, which for the first time this year also included drivers from the factory teams. Martin Molnár held his own in a strong field, finishing second in his group in Qualifying, just 0.041 seconds off the lead. He finished sixth overall.

He thus started from second place in each of the Heats and finished 5th and 6th in a hard-fought race. The last Heat turned out to be the best for Martin as he finished third. However, at the start, before the yellow line, the pole-sitter opponent braked his kart just ahead of the yellow line, Martin was briefly ahead of him, incurring a 10-second penalty and finishing 18th.

He had a very good pace on Friday and Saturday, but the performance was gone by Sunday. In the Pre-Finals he was briefly second but, in the end, he fought hard to finish sixth, for which he was awarded seven championship points. In the final, he was even more off the pace, finishing 21st.

“Our first three days were going very well,” said Martin, “We had good pace in qualifying. I made a few small mistakes in the Heats, but even those went well. However, the pace of my kart had dropped a lot by Sunday. I still tried to make the most of the Final and Pre-Final. I would have liked a better result than that, but we can improve in two weeks’ time in the second race.”

The WSK Super Master Series continues with the second round between 8-10 February, also in Lonato.
